Creative Writing as Art
In 6th grade creative writing, students spend time studying fables and eventually creating their own. We spend time learning how to correctly write in cursive which leads into our calligraphy unit. Students complete a cumulative project of an entire book of which each classmate contributes at least one page. The book is filled with student created illuminated manuscripts that showcase their writing and their art in the form of calligraphy, ornate designs, and depictions from their fable. The course then dives into the elements of fairy tales. Students complete a project where they select a common fairy tale and re-write it with a twist. The twist can tackle a social justice topic that is important to the student. These re-written fairy tales are then designed to be illuminated manuscripts and we bind the class book.
